The beautiful village of Yanoun looks peaceful, but it's anything but. Outposts (from Itamar settlement) on the surrounding hilltops encircle the village with trailers, barns, watchtowers, fences, and searchlights. The settlers living there, in efforts to drive away the villagers, burned the first village generator, attempted to destroy the second, polluted the village well with dead chickens, expropriated village orchards, stole harvested olives, and beat shepherds and activists, among other things. Before the international presence, settlers routinely entered Yanoun to terrorize the villagers with guns. In october 2002, all but two families had fled from fear. Some have found their way back, but still less than half of the original 300 residents.
