Manadel, a 16-year-old from Hares whose mentally-handicapped older brother, Mohammed, was brutally killed by soldiers in the village in 2000. In April 2005, Manadel went to the site of his brother's murder to lay a flower on the ground in his memory. Manadel saw a shiny metal thing on the ground, picked it up, and it blew up in his hands, sending shrapnel into both hands and his right knee. His widowed mother has been left with a hospital bill she cannot pay, and although the army is responsible for leaving the explosive around, they are very unlikely to help. Manandel's mother already struggles to make ends meet to support her only remaining son.
